Akhurst Machinery

Akhurst Machinery is one of Canada's largest independent distributors of industrial woodworking equipment, serving the country's manufacturing sector since 1938. A fourth-generation family business with national service coverage, Akhurst has built its reputation on deep product knowledge, long-term client relationships, and a service model that sets it apart from larger, multinational competitors. In 2025, the company began expanding into a new and strategically significant vertical: off-site and modular construction equipment, as the exclusive Canadian distributor for H&M Machines, a Netherlands-based manufacturer of automated production line systems for the sector.

THE GOAL

The off-site construction opportunity was real and growing. The North American modular construction market is projected to reach $80 billion by 2031, driven by labour shortages, affordability pressures, and demand for faster, more predictable builds. Akhurst had already secured several active clients and multiple quoted projects of significant value. The near-term goal was clear: build the sales and marketing infrastructure to support sustained growth in the segment.

The challenge was that this market was fundamentally different from Akhurst's core woodworking business. The buyers, the buying process, the competitive landscape, and the brand awareness requirements were all new territory. Serious leads had come through H&M directly rather than through Akhurst's own marketing efforts, and the company had no established presence or positioning in the off-site construction space. What was needed was a strategic foundation: a clear picture of the market, a defined position within it, and an actionable plan for building credibility and generating leads.

THE WORK

Elizabeth led a fixed-scope engagement encompassing market research, competitive analysis, audience segmentation, positioning strategy, marketing communications planning, and lead sourcing strategy, delivered as a comprehensive presentation to the Akhurst leadership team in October 2025.

The discovery process combined primary and secondary research: internal interviews with the Akhurst team, one-on-one conversations with external industry voices, attendance at the Woodrise tradeshow, and desk research drawing on the Modular Building Institute, Grandview Research, and Allied Market Research.

The competitive analysis identified Akhurst's primary competitors, mapped their positioning on a customization-versus-service matrix, and surfaced a key insight: the market's dominant players are large international firms with slower service cycles and limited North American presence. Akhurst's agility, national service network, and lean operating model represented a genuine and defensible differentiator.Four target market segments were defined: prefab and modular home manufacturers, off-site construction startups, traditional builders transitioning to off-site methods, and commercial and institutional buyers, along with detailed buyer profiles and an examination of the barriers and triggers that shape purchase decisions in this segment.

The positioning framework established a platform of "Personalized, Responsive, Canadian" and key messaging designed to distinguish Akhurst from larger competitors through service responsiveness, regional commitment, and an industry-partner mindset. A pricing insight was also surfaced: Akhurst's pricing was disproportionately low relative to market rates, leaving margin on the table without delivering additional competitive advantage.

The marketing communications plan paired digital and physical tactics appropriate to a referral-driven, relationship-first industry: association memberships, LinkedIn advertising, a Lunch & Learn webinar series, direct mail, trade show attendance, and a dedicated landing page. The lead sourcing strategy outlined a high-precision approach to curated prospect list building and association outreach across BC, Alberta, and Ontario.

THE RESULTS

The engagement delivered a strategic foundation Akhurst did not previously have: a mapped competitive landscape, a defined positioning platform, four segmented buyer profiles with distinct purchase triggers, a pricing insight that identified margin being left on the table, and a marketing communications and lead sourcing plan ready for implementation. Strategy implementation is underway.
